Why Steve Jobs didn’t set foot in TV service?

Before stepping down as a co-founder of Apple, Steve Jobs once said to the company’s executives that Apple should not set foot in TV service due to the low margins of the business. Here’s the thing.

From the year of 2009, rumors have been spreading in the market saying that Apple’s developing smart TV; an analyst even made a prediction that Apple would launch a smart television either in early 2012 or late 2013. Previous journalist Yukari Iwatani Kane from The Wall Street Journal reveals in his new book, Haunted Empire: Apple after Steve Jobs, which is yet to be published, that before Jobs’ resign from Apple, he used to express his opinion to the executives at a CEO’s meeting that releasing a new TV would not be a good idea due to the low profits and long update time of the business.

According to Kane, when asked about whether Apple would launch TV in the future, Jobs gives a negative answer without a hesitation, “No. Television is a bad business. TV users usually spend a very long time before they would finally buy a new one to replace it, and the profits are not so attractive, neither.”

The perspectives in Kane’s new book differ a lot from Steve Jobs, published in 2011 and disclosed that Jobs expected to reform the TV industry like the way he did to calculation, music, and communication industry. He announced that he wants to develop an easy-to-use television, with which can synchronize with users’ all devices through iCloud and remote control would become unnecessary to take control of a DVD player or cable television channel. “It’ll own a most simple user interface that users can possibly think of; I already got a brilliant idea.”

For attendants of the meeting, some believes in Jobs while others think he’s just speaking insincerely. But one thing that is worth to point out is three years later from that meeting, Apple did not have launched any TV products.
